About us

Riaan & Etienne Left: Riaan Erasmus Right: Etienne Botha

Tau Hogroast (spit-roast) started off as an idea / dream between two South African friends in 2008, Riaan Erasmus and Etienne Botha. We wanted to bring some of our South African traditions to Ireland and share the experience with the locals.

The start of 2009, we decided to make our dream a reality and started our very own spit-roasting business.

The word TAU means LION in North Sotho (one of 11 official languages in South Africa). North Sotho is a language of the Bantu family, most closely related to Tswana and encompasses over 30 dialects. North Sotho is spoken by nearly 5 million Sotho tribes in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. The Limpopo was also home to the legendary rain Queen Modjadji, believed by many to be immortal. Historians reveal that the first black Africans moved across the great Limpopo before 300 AD.

Traditional SpitbraaiTradional South African Spitbraai

Spit-roasting is by no means a new concept, it’s been around for thousands of years. It is important to acknowledge that even these traditional cooking methods must move with the times and by using state of the art equipment, we bring these traditions into the 21st century with sensational results.

How we do it
We use high quality stainless steel spit-roasting machines with gas burners which is then driven by an electrical motor. This enables us to work indoors without any smoke or mess, canceling the weather affect that is well known in Ireland.

We don't pre-cook any of our meats, they are freshly cooked on-site from start to finish which can take anything from 4-7 hours depending on the size of the animal.

The sight of the crackling crusted roasted spit and the smell of the roast is something to behold and an important aspect of the event.

Anyone that’s ever been to South Africa will tell you that we are the braai (BBQ) specialists, it’s in our blood.

We are dedicated at what we do and make any occasion special, and that’s our guarantee!
